Sacrum Wound Model

Description:

This invention is a training device for simulating assessment and treatment of wounds located near the sacrum. The training model looks and feels anatomically correct to the trainee, having soft, pliable gluteal muscles that require the trainee to search the cleft for hidden wounds.  The model simulates the gluteal region of a patient, including the posterior hips and upper thighs. The trainee can access the gluteal space by separating the simulated gluteal muscles.  Although there are a number of hard plastic training models on the market, none simulate the hands-on experience of carefully examining the patient’s gluteal space and handling the patient respectfully during the examination.  In one embodiment, a hard plastic pelvis and sacrum are embedded into the soft plastic model, permitting the trainee to manually feel for the location of common pressure points.  The imitation wounds are replaceable so the device can be used many times.  Moulage wounds of various stages and types can either be adhered on to the surface of the model, or replaceable wounds can be inserted as plugs into pre-set locations.  The device can be a desktop mannequin or, in another embodiment, can be worn by an actor during the training simulation.  These devices can be durable and realistic.  We anticipate that the Sacrum Wound Model device will be used for 1 -2 years before needing to be replaced. The worldwide medical simulation market is $1.5B with an AGR of 15%.  The market size for this device is estimated at 63,000 hospital and long term care facilities.  This is a re-usable trainer, with moulage wounds sold separately.  We estimate that with a price of $1,000, this is a possible $20M market opportunity in the US.  At a 20% market share, a reasonable estimate for this product is $4M annual US sales.
